The Trojans won The Phillips Cup today at the Owosso Country Club by defeating Corunna 263-280. This was the fourth year the Trojans and Cavaliers have competed in the rivalry tournament to remember the brother of Owosso High School principal Jeff Phillips. The tournament is in honor of Jim Phillips, an Owosso graduate, who was a true supporter of Owosso athletics and the young people of both Owosso and Corunna. Jim was an official for the youth basketball and baseball programs of both communities. Jim's son, Justin, was a four year varsity member of the golf team and was the last Trojan to compete in the State Finals. Jim always enjoyed following Justin around the course to watch him play. After Jim's passing, then Asst. Coach Steve Mieske and Coach Owens determined it would be a great way to remember Jim with a tournament like setting where the teams would play a 9-hole two man scramble and a 9-hole best ball. At the end of 18 holes, the winners would be determined.
The Trojans scores were as follows:
Tristan Saulnier and Andrew Bueche - Scramble score 37, Best Ball score 41 total 78
Riece Shattuck and Parker Omer - Scramble score 43, Best Ball score 49 total 92
Josiah Balsley and Braden Horn - Scramble score 45, Best Ball score 48 total 93
Special thanks to the Owosso Country Club for allowing us to host this great match!
