Girls' Cross Country Qualifies for the State Finals

Game Date
Oct 29, 2022

Owosso cross country traveled to DeWitt early on Saturday to compete in their regional finals. 16 teams competed in the meet where the top 3 teams punched their tickets to compete in the state championship on Saturday, November 5th at Michigan International Speedway. Owosso entered the meet as the 4th seed, 39 points behind DeWitt.  It would have been easy to count ourselves out as a huge 39 point underdog, but we did the opposite. We believed...in ourselves, in our training, and most of all, in each other. And boy, did our girls show up! We stole DeWitt's place and earned a spot to compete next weekend with a 3rd place finish: 1. St. Johns 57  2. Williamston 64  3. Owosso 77  4. DeWitt 86  5. Mason 160 ...

Libby Summerland turned an 11th seed into a 7th place finish and personal best 19:46. Josie Jenkinson finished just 2 seconds later in 8th place. Emma Crandell ran a 3 second PR and earned a regional medal with a 14th place finish in 20:17. However, the biggest difference in results came from our next two runners. After being in pain all season and being forced to sit out many practices and some meets, Julionna West showed just how tough and special of an athlete she is. She cut 12 places off of her seed and 18 seconds from her season best time to finish 18th in 20:33. Claire Agnew also came through in a very big way, finishing with an 18 second PR and dropping 18 places from her 49th seed to finish 31st in 21:21. Natalie Summerland was also able to drop several places to finish 47th in 22:05. And Emma Johnson, the leader and the heart and soul of this team, will get to finish her cross country career when she crosses the finish line next week at MIS. I couldn't be more happy for this girl, this slayer, who has lead her team to this success. Emma finished at 23:23 on Saturday in 66th place.

I can't begin to describe how proud I am to be the coach of this amazing team. There is truly not a more deserving group of girls and I am so thankful to be a part of their lives.

Our girls will compete at MIS next Saturday at 2:50PM.
