Owosso Girls' XC finishes 2nd place in the Flint Metro League

Game Date
Oct 13, 2021

What a day for Owosso cross country! Coach Crandell and I couldn't be more proud of our athletes today! There is a lot to tell today. First of all, this was the third FML jamboree, which means it was the third and final time all 12 schools in the Flint Metro got together to race. The first two jamborees counted for 25% of the final standings apiece, while today's championship counted for 50%. Entering today our girls team had finished 3rd and 2nd overall, leaving us tied with Goodrich for 2nd place. However, when we beat Goodrich they had their 3rd best runner missing due to an injury. Today they were back to full strength. It didn't matter though as we came through with the 2nd place finish both today and overall! Scores for today were: Fenton 51, Owosso 61, Goodrich 68, Flushing 101, etc.

Not only did our team finish 2nd overall, we had individuals who finished as all-conference. In fact, we had 4 of the top 12 girls in the league! Just like the team scores, individual results were compiled and girls who were in the top 8 earned 1st team honors, 9-16 were 2nd team all-conference, and 17-24 were honorable mention. Earning 1st team status by coming in 3rd place today and 4th overall was Josie Jenkinson. Also earning 1st team all-conference honors with a 7th place overall finish was Libby Summerland. Earning 2nd team all-conference honors with a 10 place overall finish was Onna West. Finally, finishing 12th overall and also earning 2nd team all-conference honors was Emma Johnson. It should also be noted that our 5th runner, Claire Agnew, finished 7 places better in this jamboree than she did in the previous jamboree, which was the difference between us and Goodrich today.

Even though the girls team had the most success today, our boys showed just as much growth and had a great meet today. On a warm day with a very wet course where very few runners had personal best times (including none of our girls actually), we had 3 out of our 5 boys set their career best marks! Corey Gates, Sam Perry, and Zach Wieler all cut off time today. Corey Gates even finished 8 places better than he did in the second jamboree, while Sam Perry and Jack Smith finished 4 places better. Even though Jack didn't get his PR today, he ran his 2nd race in a row in the 17's and finished in 23rd place, earning points toward honorable mention all-conference, but he finished just outside that honor.

Coach Crandell made me promise to put this in as well...I, coach Holtsclaw, was voted the Flint Metro League girls' coach of the year.

We still have work to do though. We will be back in action on Saturday at the Greater Lansing Championships in Grand Ledge.
