Some members of Owosso Girls' Track and Field traveled to Holt on Saturday for their 3rd meet in just 4 days. We did not bring the majority of the team because it would be too taxing on their bodies to compete so many times in a row. However, as the occasion was very special some athletes decided to come and compete in mainly just field events. Here is a description of the occasion:

This meet is a dedication and tribute to the late Jerry Gillett, Jack Rarick, Ruth Pridgeon, and Mike Smith - four amazing educators and coaches who departed far too early from this Earth. The impact that these four individuals had on the students of Holt Public Schools (not to mention ALL of the schools associated with this meet) is truly immeasurable. You would be hard pressed to find a student or athlete at Holt Public Schools from the early 1970’s until 2014 who did not have at least one of these legendary people as a coach, a teacher, or both.

We were blessed to have Coach Gillett, Coach Rarick, Coach Pridgeon, and Coach Smith as coaches, as teachers, as colleagues, to call them friends, and to have them as a part of our family. They each had a larger than life personality, were incredibly talented at their craft, had the ability to get the most out of everyone, and (without a doubt ) four of the best laughs in history.

As Jerry Gillett is our very own boys' coach Aaron Gillett's father, it was a great honor to be able to attend and compete in this meet. We had five girls compete today, including Jerry's own granddaughter Cassie Gillett. Cassie honored her grandpa by competing in shot put and discus, only missing her personal best throw in shot by 3.5 inches. Michaela Nichols also competed in two events for the Trojans as she both long jumped and ran the 100m dash. Reghan LePior also came out to compete in discus. Kaitlyn Cummings earned a seventh place finish in high jump, coming centimeters away from a 3" PR for the second time in as many days. Finally, it was Claire Agnew who really shined as she walked away as the pole vault champion, tying her personal best height of 8'6".
