John Miller

Inducted - 2017

John Miller's contributions to Owosso Public Schools spans over 35 years as a dedicated teacher, coach and our first director of Physical Education and Athletics from 1941 to 1975. After John graduated from Western Michigan University, with his wife Genevieve, they came to Owosso in the summer of 1941, and John became the Athletic Director in 1943. During his tenure, Owosso won 18 Conference Championships, 3 Districts Championships and 10 Regional Championships. Miller was highly involved with not only high school sports, but area youth programs including the development of recreational sports in Owosso. Miller dedicated thousands of hours teaching youth the fundamentals of sports, and did so with tireless enthusiasm. Coaches who worked under Miller while he was Athletic Director had the following comments. Bernie Conklin (coach of the 1965 undefeated football team) said, "I remember John Miller as my coach and my boss. He was just great in both capacities. He's someone I'll always remember." Jim Storrer said, "John Miller, in addition to being a tremendous athletic director, was one of the finest coaches ever at OHS." Bill Allen added, "I came to Owosso as a first year coach in 1958. I couldn't have had a better boss in John Miller." Owosso's current varsity baseball field was dedicated to Miller from the Board of Education in 1975. John passed away in 2003, at the age of 92. He will forever be remembered as an athletic establishment at Owosso High School.
