Girls Varsity Swimming vs. Brandon HS School

Game Date
Nov 6, 2021

The Owosso Trojans traveled to Brandon for the Flint Metro Swimming and Diving Conference Finals on Friday and Saturday.  Friday was preliminaries where the top 16 swimmers in each event advance to the finals on Saturday.  The Trojans had many amazing swims on Friday where the girls dropped time and moved up in the placing.  Several girls made huge moves just a few of the outstanding swims were Mya LaMay in both the 50 free and 100 free, Cali Spalding dropped 30 seconds in the 500 free and Madisyn Ketchum dropped 7 seconds in the breaststroke and went from being placed outside the top 20 to placing 8th!  Amanda Brainerd turned in two spectacular swims.  In the 50 free she turned in a state qualifying time and in the breaststroke she again qualified for States but also broke the Owosso school record.

The team came back on Saturday looking to swim even faster and they did.  In the first event the relay team of Lily Usher, Amanda Brainerd, Macy Irelan and Mya LaMay all had great splits placing second and earning a state qualifying time.  In the 200 free Kate Grinnell had lifetime best swim by 4 seconds and made a state qualifying time.  Britney Aurora-Eraza placed 5th and Mira Sivulka placed 12th in the 200 free.  In the IM Macy Ireland smashed her own school record by two seconds and placed 2nd.  In the 50 free the Trojans had 3 girls in the top 8. Amanda Brained got her hand on the wall just ahead of Sana Saab of Fenton to win the event, Mya LaMay placed 3rd and Liz McCroan 8th.  Macy Irelan placed 2nd in the fly, Lily Usher placed 9th and Mira Sivulka was 13th.  In the 100 free Mya LaMay touched 4th while Liz McCroan was 9th.  Owosso had 5 girls in the top 13 for the 500.  Kate Grinnell lead the way taking 2nd, Britney Aurora-Erazo was 3rd, Sophie Voss was 6th and Cali Spalding was 7th, Rebekah Starr was 13th.  In the 200 free relay Liz McCroan, Mya LaMay, Britney Aurora-Erazo and Kate Grinnell took 2nd.  In the backstroke Lily Usher placed 5th, Birdie Tkaczyk was 7th and Natalie Nolph was 15th. The Trojans placed 5 swimmers in the top 16 in the breaststroke.  Amanda Brainerd lead start to finish and won the event while rebreaking her record from the night before. Sophie Voss was 5th, Madisyn Ketchum was 8th, McKinley Guru was 11th and Rebekah Starr was 15th.  In the final event the 400 free the team of Macy Irelan, Kate Grinnell, Amanda Brainerd and Britney Aurora-Erazo placed 2nd and broke the school school record.

While the Trojans were not able to beat Fenton who have won the conference title for at least the last 15 straight years, they swam amazing.  Every girl had at least one lifetime best time with most girls have 2 lifetime best swims.  Owosso scored 400 points which is the most points they have scored at the conference meet since joining the Flint Metro Conference 5 years ago. I can’t put into words how proud I am of this team.  The girls train all year for this meet and the executed their swims wonderfully. The improvements the swimmers have made from our first practice on August 9th till now have been fun to watch.

Final results: Fenton 588, Owosso 400, Swartz Creek 262, Holly 242, Brandon 198, Corunna 180, Kearsley 119
