Flint Metro League Champions!

Game Date
May 10, 2024

For the second year in a row Owosso girls are the Flint Metro League Champions! Friday's championship meet was setup to be a showdown between Owosso and Goodrich with the projected score to be dead even. However, what doesn't show up in the projected score is grit and determination. Our girls simply wanted it more and stepped up to deliver masterful performances all evening, overachieving in event after event. When the smoke cleared, the scores were as follows:

Owosso 157

Goodrich 146

Clio 83

Lake Fenton 51

Corunna 49

Brandon 37

Nobody had a bigger evening than Gabi Hufnagel. Gabi put on a show with 4 wins...that's right, four 1st place finishes out of her 4 events! Gabi came out of the gate with a personal best 16.58 in the 100m hurdles. Next she joined 4x100m teammates Kyle Bermudez, Skotti Ball-Duley, and Libby Summerland in a league and season best time of 52.59. Third she added a win in the 300m hurdles with a time of 48.38. Finally, in the most important race of the evening, despite being seeded 4th place, Gabi ran a personal best (and what would be a state qualifying time if it was at regionals) 26.9 in the 200m, earning her 4th gold medal and locking up the comference championship for us.

Besides Gabi and her 4x100m teammates, we had two more athletes earn 1st team all-conference honors. Peyton Spicer started her day with a solid win in discus, throwing 109' 9" and winning by over 14'! Next Peyton picked up her 2nd win by jumping 5'2" in high jump. Peyton went on to take 2nd in shot put with a throw of 32' 10.5". Peyton was also able to earn a couple points for the team in long jump, taking 5th with a jump of 14' 3.75".

Desiree Mofield threw an absolute bomb in shot put. Her throw of 35' 9.75" won by nearly 3 feet, beating her PR by a foot and a half and surpassing the state qualifying mark of 35' if she is able to repeat her performance next week at regionals. Desiree also finished 2nd in discus with a throw of 95' 6".

Libby Summerland was fantastic all day, walking away with not only her win with the 4x100m relay team, but also two 2nd team all-conference performances and a 3rd team performance. Libby finished 2nd in pole vault with a height of 11', losing only to the reining state champion. Next Libby finished 3rd in the 100m with a time of 13.62. Finally, Libby delivered her best performance with a 59.28 in the 400m, finishing 2nd and putting her .28 seconds from Dillon McClintock's school record.

Kyle Bermudez had herself a day as well. Finally feeling mostly healthy after battling a hamstring injury this season, Kyle was able to earn a win as a part of the 4x100m relay team and take 2 more 2nd place finishes and a third. Kyle pole vaulted a season best 9' to finish in 3rd place and tie her career best vault. Kyle then used the adrenaline from her vaulting performance to long jump 15'2", over 7" further than her previous best jump. Her effort earned her a 2nd place finish in an event that she was seeded tied for 5th. Kyle then cut .42 from her season best 100m hurdles, finishing 2nd with a time of 17.00.

We had 1 more 2nd team all conference performance from our 4x800m relay team. Emma Crandell, Josie Jenkinson, Onna West, and Skotti Ball-Duley ran 10:52 on their way to a 2nd place finish.

Skotti was also a part of the winning 4x100m relay team and despite being sick, was still able to finish 3rd in the 800m with a time of 2:26.79. I can't wait to see how fast she will be when she is healthy again next week!

Other top 6 scorers of the evening included:

Onna West had a personal best 54.06 in the 300m hurdles, finishing in 5th. She added a 6th place finish in the 1600m at 6:00.35, along with her leg in the 2nd place 4x800m relay

Josie Jenkinson finished 5th in the 1600m with a time of 5:42.29 to go with her solid leg in the 4x800m relay.

Isabel Root had a PR in pole vault with a height of 8', earning a 4th place finish.

Other PRs include:

Lexi Blaha had a PR in the 100m with a time of 14.62.

Levi Davidson had 2 PRs, finishing with a vault of 7' and 200m time of 30.8 (a PR of nearly 5 seconds!)

Next up are the regional finals next Friday at Corunna.
