Girls Varsity Track vs. Corunna

Game Date
Apr 11, 2023
Score
TROJANS: 77
CORUNNA HIGH SCHOOL: 59

For the first time since 1995, Owosso Girls' Track and Field has beaten Corunna in a dual meet! With a score of 77-59, Owosso won 12 out of 17 events with many shining performances and set the tone for what looks to be a great season.

The first and biggest moment of the meet was when Claire Agnew set a new school record in pole vault with a vault of 11'3". That is, until her very next vault when she broke it again at 11'6". After finishing 2nd in the state last season at 11'0", Claire wants even more this year. She also added a 2nd place finish in the 400 (1:05.39) and a win in the mile relay (4:41.95).

Two athletes tied for earning the most points of the night (15) for Owosso. One of these athletes was freshman Emma Crandell who won the 1600 (5:56.86), 800 (2:44.32), and 3200 (12:59.04). Running all three of those distance events is hard enough in one meet, let alone winning them.

Peyton Spicer was the other high scoring athlete with 3 wins of her own in high jump (4'10"), shot put (30'1"), and discus (88'5"). For the 2nd time this season, Peyton just barely brushed and knocked off the bar at what would have been a school record jump of 5'3.25".

Libby Summerland started the season where she left off last year, in dominant fashion. Libby's 1:01.54 was already as good as the time she ran at regionals last year where she qualified to run at the state finals in the 400 meter dash. She won the event today by nearly 4 full seconds. She also took 2nd place in the 200 (28.92) to a very fast Neelege Sims from Corunna. Finally, she ended the day with a 2nd place finish in pole vault with very tired legs (9'6").

Another very impressive performance came from freshman and 1st year hurdler Gabrielle (Gabi) Hufnagel. Gabi started the day with a 3rd place finish in the 100m hurdles (19.88) after hitting a few that slowed her down. She then went on to win the 300m hurdles with a very good time of 52.75, nearly 2 and a half seconds in front of second place. She was also part of the winning 4x400m relay team.

Kyle Bermudez also found gold in the 100m hurdles (18.88) and picked up where she left off last season.

The final first place finish was by our 4x800m relay team of Emma Johnson, Onna West, Natalie Summerland, and Mia Lentz who ran 12:10.

Other scoring performances include:

Natalie Summerland was 2nd in the 800 (2:57.85).

Julionna West was 3rd in the 1600 (6:28.97)

Emma Johnson was 3rd in the 3200 (14:40.02)

Desiree Mofield was 3rd in shot put (26'6.5")

Isabel Root was 3rd in long jump (12'9.75")

Owosso will be back in action on Friday at the Fowler Invite.
