Girls Varsity Track vs. Goodrich HS School

Game Date
May 2, 2023
Score
TROJANS: 83.00
GOODRICH HIGH SCHOOL: 54.00

To set the tone of the evening, 4-0 Goodrich came to Owosso on senior night to take on our 4-0 Trojans for the regular season title and a perfect league record on Tuesday. It hovered around a windy 40 degrees and rained on and off with a touch of hail at one point. On paper, Goodrich looked to be the better team. However, they weren't as tough as we were. Our girls delivered one of the most gritty, unselfish performances I have ever seen. Every girl played a part in our huge 83-54 upset of the defending league champions. Although PRs were hard to come by for most athletes, many of our girls beat competitors who came in ranked higher than themselves, and everyone put the needs of the team ahead of their own. As the regular season champions, we aren't conference champions just yet. Next Friday (May 12th) we will compete against the entire Flint Metro League in one track meet that is worth 50% of the season standings. If we finish in the top 2 we are guaranteed at least a share of the conference championship.

We were able to honor our 3 seniors who have each competed for Owosso High School for the past 4 years. Thank you for all that you have given to your team and teammates Claire Agnew, Emma Johnson, and Courtney Lott! You have each truly left your mark on Owosso Track and your coaches. I am so proud of the women and athletes you have grown into and I will miss each of you very much! I love you girls!

Individually, nobody had a bigger day than Libby Summerland. Libby was seeded 2nd in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and we were seeded to lose the 4x100m. Instead, Libby found a speed reserve that I didn't know she had as she charged ahead in both the 100m (13.97 - season record) and 200m (28.51), winning both events. Her relay team (along with Kyle Bermudez, Claire Agnew, and Gabi Hufnagel) also won (54.87). Finally, she was able to hold onto her 2nd place seed in the 400m (1:02.51), the event right after she finished running the 4x400m relay.

Emma Crandell also showed up in a big way today! Emma was seeded 3rd in the 1600m, 3200m, and 800m today. Running all three races by themselves in one meet is no easy feat, let alone pushing hard enough finish ahead of where she was seeded. Emma ended the day with 2nd place finishes in all three races with times of 5:46.48, 12:30.81, and 2:52.03 respectively. More than that, her confidence is growing by the race as she is realizing how much her hard work is paying off.

Other scoring performances included:

Peyton Spicer: 1st in high jump (4'8"), 1st in discus (101'10"), and 3rd in shot put (27'11.75")

Claire Agnew: This senior captain was 1st in pole vault where she still managed to vault 11'0 on a horrible weather day, 1st in the 4x100m relay, 3rd in the 400m (1:07.98), and 3rd in the 200m (29.58 - season record!)

Gabi Hufnagel: 1st in the 300m hurdles (52.59), 1st in the 4x100m relay, 2nd in the 100m hurdles (22.67) as she was trying to conserve her energy for the 100m dash the very next event, and 3rd in the 100m (14.57).

Kyle Bermudez: 1st in long jump (13'2"), 1st in the 4x100m relay, and 2nd in pole vault (7')

Gracie Meyer: 1st in the 100m hurdles (21.17) and 3rd in the 300m hurdles (1:03.22)

Isabel Root: 2nd in the 300m hurdles (1:00.38) and 2nd in high jump (4'3")

Courtney Lott: This senior was 2nd in the long jump (12') and 3rd in the 100m hurdles.

Desiree Mofield: 2nd in shot put (28'1.25")
