Girls Varsity Track competes in the Cavalier Classic

Game Date
May 5, 2023

Corunna hosted 15 schools on Friday in its annual Cavalier Classic track meet. The meet has a different scoring format than normal meets where everyone who competes earns points. Therefore, having every event filled is the best way to rack up points. However, we didn't choose to compete for a better team place. Instead, we treated it like any other invitational: a chance for individuals to earn medals and PRs. As a result, Owosso finished 12th out of 15 teams, including 3rd out of 5 teams in the medium school division. More importantly though, were able to take home quite a few medals and PRs like we wanted.

Many athletes had great performances today. Two in particular had enormous races. First was Kyle Bermudez in the 100m hurdles. Seeded 12th in the race with a time of 18.53, Kyle put on a cape and absolutely flew over the hurdles, finishing 3rd with a time of 17.24. That drop in time brings her regional ranking to 3rd, just .25 seconds out of first. Kyle also earned a 4th place medal in pole vault with a vault of 8'6".

After finding speed reserves in the 100m and 200m on Tuesday, Libby was able to put together her most impressive race yet in the 400m. Libby used her new found speed to blaze her way to a 2nd place finish in the 400m with a time of 1:00.08, cutting a full second off of her PR time and ranking her at 8th in the state in the event. Libby also finished 2nd in pole vault with a vault of 10'0", and set a PR time of 27.82 in the 200m.

On top of these PR performances, we came home with 3 first place medals. Peyton Spicer was able to earn a pair of them with dominant wins in both discus and high jump. Peyton's toss of 103'6" in discus was over 10' further than 2nd place, while her jump of 5'2" was 4" above the next highest jump. Peyton's consistent performances are setting her up well in our upcoming championship meets.

Our other first place finish also just happened to be a new meet record! Claire Agnew went to work in pole vault, besting the previous meet record of 11'0" by an inch. That makes 5 meets in a row of 11' (or 11'1") vaults. Claire is poised for great things as we enter the final month of the season.

Other medal winners included:

Emma Crandell finished 4th in the 3200m with a time of 12:29.49 and 5th in the 1600m at 5:47.99.

Desiree Mofield finished 6th in shot put with a throw of 29'5".

Other PR performances:

Claire Agnew had a season record in the 200m with a time of 29.47.

Gabi Hufnagel had a PR in the 100m hurdles with a time of 18.63.

Gracie Meyer had a PR in the 100m hurdles with a time of 21.00.

The 4x100m relay team of Claire Agnew, Libby Summerland, Kyle Bermudez, and Gabi Hufnagel had a PR of 53.55.

Khloe Muzzy had a PR jump of 13'5" in long jump.

Courtney Lott had a season record of 13'1" in long jump.

We will be back in action at the FML Championship Meet next Friday in Holly where we will compete for a conference championship.
