Shiawassee County Cross Country Championship

Game Date
Oct 21, 2023

What a day for Owosso girls' cross country! Both our high school and middle school teams competed in the Shiawassee County cross country championships on Saturday and BOTH came away with a first place trophy!

Not only did our varsity girls win, all 6 of our team members finished in the top 8! Emma Crandell, Libby Summerland, and Josie Jenkinson finished as the top 3 runners in the county, followed by Onna West, Natalie Summerland, and Skotti Ball-Duley in 6th-8th place. Only two Corunna athletes were able to finish between our two groups of runners. Unfortunately, the results are not posted yet so I am not sure on times for everyone, but once they are posted, full results can be found at: https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/221708/results/887288

Our varsity girls now set their sights on regionals next Friday where we look to punch their ticket to the state finals and go toe to toe with St. Johns and DeWitt for a regional championship. The girls run at 2:00 at DeWitt high school if you would like to come out and show your support.

Our middle school girls also had a phenomenal day with a 13 point win and 4 of the top 12 runners (each earning All-County honors). Abby Crandell capped off an unbelievable season with not only a 1st place finish, but a win by OVER A MINUTE in a two mile race (12:26). I can't wait to see what the future holds for her! The next Owosso athlete to cross the line was 6th grader Penny Ewald, who has improved by a tremendous amount this season on her way to a 4th place finish with a time of 14:02. Kaleigh Slingerland came in just 7 seconds later as the 5th runner in the county (14:09) to end her middle school career. Sadie Voss finished with 2nd team all-county honors with a 12th place finish and a big PR (14:36). Ava Spencer and Faith Darling were the next 2 finishers for Owosso, separated by just 1 second (15:12 and 15:13) in 17th and 18th place. Gabriella Arellano finished 24th with a time of 15:36. Miriam Skarich came in 31st with a time of 16:37, followed by Kayleann Webb less than a second later. Addison Balzer came across in 38th with a time of 17:00, and Maryann Hurrell finished in 55th with a time of 21:03.

Congratulations middle school athletes on a great season! I look forward to being able to hopefully coach all of you in the future! Full results for the meet can be found at: https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/221708/results/887289
